About cat cataracts

Cloudy lens, gradual vision changes

A feline cataract is a clouding of the crystalline lens inside the eye. Unlike the blue-grey haze of nuclear sclerosis (a normal age-related change), true cataracts cause a denser, white opacity and can progress to significant vision impairment.

🔵

What it looks like

A blue-white or white opacity visible inside the pupil area of the eye. The affected eye may look distinctly different from the other. The cat may bump into objects, be hesitant in dim light, or show reduced tracking of moving objects.

Causes in Indian cats

The most common causes are diabetes mellitus (cats fed high-carb diets), uveitis (eye inflammation from FIV or FeLV), trauma, and advancing age. Diabetic cataracts are an emerging concern in India as cat owners increasingly feed human food and high-carb commercial diets.

🐱

Cats most affected

Persian and Himalayan cats (genetic predisposition), cats over 10 years old, and cats with poorly controlled diabetes. Any cat that has had significant eye inflammation (uveitis) is also at elevated risk.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about cat cataracts

Can PawCheck screen for cataracts in my cat? +
Yes. PawCheck's cat eye scanner screens for cataracts among 6 cat eye conditions. The AI detects lens opacity patterns and gives a Normal, Monitor, or Urgent severity result. Always follow up with a vet — a complete ophthalmic examination confirms the extent of cataract formation.
How do I know if my cat's cloudy eye is cataracts or just age-related haziness? +
Nuclear sclerosis (normal aging) gives a subtle blue-grey haze in both eyes without affecting vision. Cataracts are denser, whiter, often affecting one eye more than the other, and associated with vision changes. PawCheck's eye scanner screens across both conditions and helps assess severity.
Is PawCheck free? +
Yes. Free with 5 scans per month. Pro plan ₹99/month for unlimited scans.
