Notoedric mange is caused by Notoedres cati — a burrowing mite that causes severe itching as it tunnels into the skin. It typically starts on the face, nose bridge, and ear edges before spreading to the neck, feet, and body. It spreads rapidly between cats in close contact.
Thick grey-yellow or brownish crusts on the ear edges, nose bridge, and face. Intense scratching — the cat may scratch until skin bleeds. Progressive hair loss in affected areas, skin thickening, and in severe cases, widespread body involvement.
Notoedric mange is highly prevalent in India's large stray and community cat populations. Indoor cats can be exposed through contact with outdoor cats, shared bedding, or via a cat that goes outside. India's warm climate helps mites persist in the environment.
Outdoor and indoor-outdoor cats, cats in shelters or multi-cat environments, and kittens are at highest risk. Cats living in close proximity to stray cats face elevated exposure. Any unvaccinated or non-parasiticide-treated cat is susceptible.
