Feline scabies is caused by mites that burrow into the skin, laying eggs and triggering an intense immune reaction. The resulting itching is severe — cats scratch themselves raw. It is highly contagious between cats and spreads through direct contact and shared bedding.
Severe, relentless scratching and biting at the skin. Crusty, scabby lesions — often starting on the face, ears, and extremities. Over time, skin thickens and hair loss becomes pronounced. Affected cats may develop secondary bacterial infections from self-trauma.
Scabies mites spread very efficiently through direct cat-to-cat contact and shared bedding or grooming tools. In Indian multi-cat households and catteries, one infected cat can infect all others within days. Quarantine of affected cats is important.
All cats are susceptible. Outdoor cats, cats in shelters, kittens, and immunocompromised cats face the highest risk. Unlike some skin conditions, scabies does not have breed predisposition — any cat exposed to an infected cat can develop it.
