Hot spots occur when a dog scratches, licks, or bites an area compulsively — breaking skin and introducing bacteria. The moist Indian climate allows bacterial colonies to spread rapidly, turning a small irritation into a large inflamed patch within 24–48 hours.
A moist, red, oozing skin patch — often with matted fur stuck to it. The area may have a distinct smell. The dog constantly licks or chews the spot. Hot spots appear most frequently on the neck, hips, and between the legs.
High humidity during the July–September monsoon creates ideal conditions for bacterial skin flare-ups. Wet fur that doesn't dry fully, combined with heat, allows bacteria to proliferate rapidly under the coat.
Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd, and other thick-coated breeds. Dogs with dense double coats retain moisture close to the skin — the primary risk factor for hot spot formation.
